Lord received letters from four different captains of his ships: Robert Cleaves (master of the General Berry and Stars and Stripes), John F. Mason (master of the Lincoln), George W. Homans, and William Symonds. The captains write about the voyages, difficulty of hiring and keeping seamen, stranding, the sailing ability of the ships, management of the ships, and some personal matters. Cleaves worries about Confederate attacks during the Civil War. During their voyages, the ships carried cargoes of molasses, flour, and lumber. Ports sailed to include Boston (Mass.), Cape Hatteras (N.C.), Dublin (Ireland), France, Hampton Roads (Va.), Havana (Cuba), Kennebunkport (Me.), Philadelphia (Pa.), San Francisco (Calif.), and Vancouver (B.C.)
